Mega Swagbucks Day!

So for awhile now I have been expressing the benefits of Swagbucks, don't get me wrong, I love Swagbucks, but one of my loyal readers has expressed some concerns that they have with Swagbucks.

This reader is very unhappy with SwagBucks right now. They have been saving their Swagbucks to get Amazon gift cards for Christmas. Just like I have been advising them to do.

The problem, First, they would only allow her to redeem two gift cards a day. This is pretty standard with Swagbucks. It is a little frustrating, but with planning can still work.

My reader then asks: "Then what was the point of saving them all up?" I completly understand the frustration.
She is also frustrated by the way Swagbucks "delivers" the giftcards. "They will not credit the ELECTRONIC gift codes to me for 2 to 3 WEEKS - AFTER Christmas!!! WHY? I don't have to wait for shipping, and I need them now. That's the whole point of electronic gift cards, the immediate reward."
This is where the planning comes in:
So you have been saving Swagbucks all year so you can redem them for Amazon gift cards for Christmas Shopping? Well when you start making your lists, check your Swagbuck balance and start redeeming them.

I have a calander reminder set up to reminde me early NOVEMBER to start cashing in my bucks. That way I can cash in the 2 a day limit, and they will be credited to my account when I need them. I know that this probably won't be useful advise this year, but hopefully can work for you whenever you are saving Swagbucks for a special shopping occasion.

I hope that my readers won't stop using Swagbucks, after all they really do add up and you really get your prizes. (Sometimes takes a bit of planning.) I hope that this readers experiance doesn't detour anyone from earning some great prizes!

Works for me Wednesday

Wrapping presents can be a big event. One way to make this a little bit easier is to make sure I have all my supplies within arms reach. I have plenty of bags, bows and paper. I gather several rolls of tape and a black marking pen. (I don’t really use gift tags, I just write directly on the paper).

I find that this is easier on my brain :) if I just wrap for one person at a time. I gather all the presents for that person, and just go to town. I make sure I use a combination of gift wrap, of bags and bows. By wrapping all the gifts for one person at a time, I can check off my paper list what I bought vs what I wrapped and make sure I have everything. I also make sure that all little Johnny’s presents are not all wrapped in the same paper. – just adds some spice!

With Christmas Carols playing in the background and a cup of hot chocolate by my side this last step for Christmas morning is much more enjoyable!

Super Savings Saturday... cereal!

I then had 2 manufactures coupons for $1/2- so my total went to $7. Then I added a catalina in that was $2 off 5 boxes for a grand total of $5 for 5 boxes!

Christmas candy was on sale for 2/$6 and I had 2 coupons for buy 2 get one free. So I got 6 bags- Total $18, after coupons $12 or $2 a bag. Now I still have some candy left over from Halloween, but somehow the little mice I call children in my house have been snacking on it! LOL!

Christmas Letter Writing..

So it's a week and half before Christmas and your halls are decked, baking is done, the stockings are hung with care. What's left you ask? The annual Family Christmas Letter......

I have written a family Christmas letter for almost 20 years. Some are funny, some are short and sweet and some have a theme. Point is, I would match rather hear about how your year was than a card with only a signature. That's why I write a letter. (The Golden rule in effect here!)

But writing the letter can be time consuming. It is also hard to be creative year after year. Here are a few tips on different ways to write your letter.

1) Keep it short and sweet. A one sided page is great! If you want to include pictures that is fine also, or have them printed on a second page.

2)Top 10 list – What are the 10 most important things that happened to your family this year? How about the most humorous? Or most unbelievable? A top 10 list can be a fun and easy way to describe your family’s year.

3) A variation of the top 10 list would be the 12 months of 2011. Just a quick highlight of your families events from every month of the year.

4)Try writing your Christmas Letter from an unique point-of view. For example, the dog, the baby, the new house etc.

5)Write a fun Christmas rhyme. (Think Dr. Suess!)

If you do summurize the year keep copies, in future years it will be great to look back and remember just how much fun 2011 really was!

Just remember to Keep it Simple, Keep it Upbeat & Happy, and Have fun with it!I hope that some of these ideas have started your creative juices flowing. Now, I have to go write my annual letter!

Duracell Batteries Free!

Need batteries for those Christmas presents? Here's a way to get FREE DURACELL BATTERIES!

Staples is having a FREE Duracell Batteries after Staples Rewards through December 31st. This is a great way to stock up on batteries.  ( I usually give a pack or two to each of my boys as a gift, then they know where their batteries are and use them for their toys.)

This offer is only in-store, and look for the 16packs of AA or AAA Duracell Batteries. They're usually around $12.99/pack, but occasionally they're on sale for less. Here's how it works:
  1. Sign up for Staples Rewards if you haven't already.
  2. Purchase either the AA or AAA Duracell Batteries. Be sure it's the 16-pack. Limit 2 per customer per week.
  3. You'll receive the full purchase price* back via Staples Rewards, which you will receive via email about one month later. You can either print out your Rewards coupon to spend in-store or use it as credit online. I used my last set of rewards to buy Charmin Basic TP at a great sale price.
You can get up to two packs per week until December 31st. I've been using the Staples Rewards program for years and have been very happy with it. *Note: If you use any coupons for the purchase, you'll only receive the price after discounts. I tried to use Rewards from a previous sale, Staples won't allow that.
Thanks MoneyWise Moms!

Sorry Dear Readers...

I am sorry I have been absent for a while. I promise to do better in the future.
To explain my absence, I will tell you this sometimes we all need to take a break from things in order to come back strong.

I love the Christmas season, the lights, the cold, the fun, the surprises. I also remember the reason for the season. A time to celebrate Jesus and his birth.

But sometimes the season can be overwhelming. Even when you have your lists, :).
This week has been one of those weeks.

I work two jobs for those of you who don't know and then I also have this blog to help support my family. I have been so busy with work, with decorating, with looking at and checking off my lists, that I simply didn't have the time, energy or ideas to write. And sometimes you gotta take care of yourself so you can take care of others.

But I'm  BACK!

If you have any topic you would like me to cover, please comment and I will do my best.
Thanks for being loyal readers and thanks for sticking with me!

Christmas Chores..

Yup, that's right I said chores. The chores of pulling out the boxes of decorations, unpacking them, hauling them back to storage, shopping, wrapping, trips to the post office, etc.

Yes, those (and more) are all necessary parts of Christmas. But if you make a list, (and check it twice), you can plan your holiday so that it isn't so stressful.

I have a master list of what needs to be done, decorating, delivering, cleaning, baking, shopping. wrapping.
I then have sub lists under those: who I have to buy for (family, friends, Secret Santa at work), who is getting baked goods. What/who I am buying for etc.

I know it sounds like even more work, but I promise, if you just take 20 minutes and jot down everything you want/need to do, and then work your way thru the list it will all be breeze, and hopefully less stress!

Using ordinary household in unexpected ways- Part 2

Here are some tips for using ordinary household items in unexpected ways.

Use Glass Jars
If you have a little one, you might have those little glass jars around your house, if you don’t, find a friend who does cause they make great storage space in your garages or workshop.  Nail or superglue the lids to the underside of a surface near where you store your tools, then twist the jars into place. Put like-size nuts and bolts in one jar, wood screws in another, nails in another. Also attach an empty jar so that when you’re working on a project, you can gather the necessary hardware and stow it there.

Use a Paper Towel Holder
Christmas is coming.. do you have a marathon gift wrapping session planned? Take a paper towel stand and stack ribbon from largest to smallest bottom to top, by sliding spools onto a paper towel stand’s post. When done, tape the ribbon ends to their spools to keep them neat.

Use Spice Containers
Spice containers, the clear topped ones, are great for keeping the odds and ends that accumulate on your desktop and in your drawers—stamps, paper clips, rubber bands, etc..

Use Velcro Tape
This is an excellent tip for keeping cords bundled. You can also screw a small hook into the bottom of a desk and hung bundled wires up and out of the sight line. To keep track of which cord belongs to which machine, attach labels with the names of the cords’ owners (lamp, TV, DVD, phone) near the plugs.

Use a Coat Rack
Use an old coat rack to hang your necklaces and bracelets within easy reach. Another variation would be to use a bulletin board and push pins

Support Small business today!

Two of my favorite small business are Branson's Chocolates and Allysabeth's Hidden Treasures.

Branson's Chocolates
(not sure why my picture didn't come thru)
Located in Ashland, Oregon, Branson's Chocolates was founded on the love of fine chocolate and fudge.  Wanting to make chocolate and fudge the traditional hand made way; we use recipes that originated in 1887 on Mackinac Island, Michigan and fine chocolates from Peter’s Chocolate.  All items are hand made in small batches, to ensure quality. Owner Deena Branson is also my cousin and I highly recommend her and her chocolate!

Allyssabeth's Hidden Treasures  is an EBAY store owned and operated by my sister Tracy. Allyssabeth's Hidden Treasures offers collectibles and treasures of all kinds. Antique Jewelry and Vintage Jewelry, especially Victorian and turn-of-the-century, is an area she specializes in to bring you fantastic deals. She also offers skin care and cosmetic closeouts, informational products, and crochet patterns, both old and new. Crochet booklets, pattern books, magazines; vintage patterns are all available. Original patterns are her particular specialty. Tracy is an award winning crochet pattern designer and sells some of her own personal creations as well.

Holiday Shopping-

With the holidays right around the corner it seems that finding good deals and savings money is more important than ever.
That being said, one of the best ways to save a bit of money, get cash back and even a bonus is EBATES

When you sign up for Ebates you will get a $10 bonus after spending $25 at one of your favorite online retailers. Which means you could get paid to do your Black Friday/Cyber Monday holiday shopping this year! They have over 1200 stores to shop at, places like Barnes & Noble, JC Penny and Target.

How does it work? First,  join Ebates.com. Then you start your shopping trip on the site. Easy, just go to EBATES, search for the store you want and click, that's it!  There are no points to redeem, no forms to mail in, and no fees. How is it possible? Stores pay Ebates a commission for sending shoppers their way, and Ebates uses the commission to pay you cash back. Of course, the $10 bonus doesn’t hurt, either!

Decorating for Thanksgiving

Tips for Decorating your Thanksgiving table:

When decorating for your Thanksgiving table, it works best to have a plan.
First, you need to decide on a color scheme. Pick out your tablecloth and napkins. If you don’t have a tablecloth, try a table runner or just placemats.  I usually use just the table runner because I don’t have a tablecloth to fit my table.

Look around your room, your yard and your home. Is there some special piece you want to have shine? Are your candles hiding in a closet somewhere? Pull them out; there are lots of ways to use  your special objects.

Do you want a centerpiece? The best one would be one that doesn’t obstruct the view across the table. You want to be able to see all your guests! Also, it would be great if your centerpiece could be left on the table even with all your serving dishes.

Some of the things you have around your house can make great centerpieces. Try silk leaves scattered up and down the center with a few votive candles among them.

A tall glass jar or hurricane lamp makes a great centerpiece. Just add fall leaves either real or silk, it’s all good!

A simple, low glass bowl will do great with leaves, fall flowers or even some small gourds! Let your imagination run wild!

If you don’t want or don’t have the room to do a centerpiece, try a small flower on or above each plate.

Don’t forget the napkins, the nice glasses and silverware!

If you have little ones, set up the kids table with a paper tablecloth (white preferably) and give them some crayons to color on the table while they are waiting for the food to be ready.

But above all have fun!

Baking day...

So this weekend, I did all my baking for the holidays.  I only bake pumpkin bread but I bake A LOT OF IT!

Here's what I ended up with:

37 small loaves

4 big loaves

24 mini loaves

18 muffins

And that doesn't even count the 10 loaves that didn't turn out and are sitting on the table for the family to snack on!

Do you bake for the holidays?

Super Savings Saturday

Well my mom and I went out yesterday and did A LOT OF SHOPPING.

One of the best deals I got was all of the above from Bath and Body Works.
They were having a buy 3 get 3 free of the Signature Collection, and when you bought one Signature Collection Item you got the socks and a small size lotion.
The anti bacterial purse size were 5/$5.  And I had a coupon for a free mini candle, (which they were out of so they subsituted another small size lotion.

My Grand Total was $77.25. After BOGO, and coupons, (I had one for $10/$30 purchase), my total was $26.50. I also had a $20 gift card from work so I paid out of pocket $6.50!

Mom and I found some other great deals. We both had a $10/$10 purchase at JCPenny's and another one for $10/$25 purchase. I can't tell you what we got.. (Christmas presents :) ) but sufice it to say we walked out paying a total of $16 between the two of us for 6 presents and I have another $10 "cash back" that needs to be used before Thursday.

How was your Saturday?

Using ordinary items in unexpected ways part 1

Here are some tips for using ordinary household items in unexpected ways.

Use Shower Curtain Hooks
If you have some extra closet space, use shower curtain hooks to hang purses from. This will free up space on the floor or shelf. And you can see at a glance where you handbags are!

Use a Dish-Drying Rack
Keep coloring books and art supplies organized in a dish-drying rack. Stack the books, like plates, between the prongs. Store markers, crayons, and pencils in the utensil caddy.
Use Colored Bins/Basket
Assign a colored bin or basket to each family member for the bathroom. A simple place to store make-up, shaving stuff, combs, brushes etc.

Use a Tissue Box
When your tissue box is empty you can use it to store and dispense plastic grocery bags with ease. Stuff the empty bags into an old tissue box. When you need one, simply pull out one. For a slimmer solution, try a cardboard paper-towel tube.

Use Votive-Candle Holders
Votive candle holders are great for organizing a desk drawer with paper clips, stamps or rubber bands. They can also be used when serving hor-derves. Fill them with toothpicks and offer along with appetizers.

A new Christmas Tradition

Start a New Christmas Tradition:
Buy Local.
Here are a few super ideas for gift giving this year, and great ways to support your local economy.
It's time to think outside the box. Here are a few ideas:
Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber?
How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the local working guy?
Maybe you know someone whose computer could use a tune-up, I am sure you can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.
How about a gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages.
Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.
How about a date night gift? Offer to watch your friends children and give them a gift certificates to a local eatery?
Maybe you know an eldery person who would love someone to come in and clean for a day/week?
Maybe something a bit more personal, hit your local craft fairs/bazaars and find something handmade.
Just a few ideas to get you started. Enjoy the season!

Works for me Wednesday

I am trying to be more grateful for the things that I have in my life. One of the ways I am doing this is, EVERYDAY this month, I am writing as my status on Facebook something I am grateful for. This makes me accountable to do it everyday, and those that I am grateful for get to see it also!

I have written about each member of my family, my house, my washer/dryer. Other times I am grateful for silly things like that it’s raining or not... But everyday I have to stop and think about something and express it to the world, sometimes this is hard, but it makes me more aware of the goodness and mercies I have in my life.

That’s what works for me!
