Works for Me Wednesday

Feel like the stuff in your car is getting out of control? Just a few quick minutes can get it all organized and ready for the summer! A visor organizer can neatly stow stuff you'll need on the road, like sunglasses or favorite CDs.
I use large Ziploc bags to stow my maps in the driver's-side cubby. All manuals and registration documents go in the glove compartment, also in Ziplock bags.

I don't live in an area that has tolls roads, but I have family that does, an empty pill bottle to keep change handy is a great thing to have.

In the backseat, use an organizer for toys, ice scrapers, and umbrellas.

A plastic tote is great in the trunk for emergency car supplies like jumper cables and flares.
Voila! Your car is now neat and uncluttered!

Works for Me Wednesday!-- Sliced Olives

One trick I have to save some pennies, and get twice the amount is to buy medium, or large whole olives and use my egg slicer to get SLICED olives.

I have noticed that the price of SLICED olives has risen considerably over the past bit.
A can of whole olives is about  $.88 for 16 oz., where a can of sliced olives is %1.19 for a 8 oz can...

It only takes a few moments and Presto: sliced olives for a fraction of the price.. and twice the amount!
That's What Works for Me!!

Works for Me Wednesday--Quick Tips OutDoor Edition

Here are a few more quick tips--

-- Got a splinter you can't get out? just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue on it. Let dry and peel the dried glu off the skin, the splinter sticks to the glue.

--WD40 removes dirt and grime from the bbq grill.

--WD40 keeps ceramic/teracotta garden pots from oxidizing.

--Save your newspapers to use in your flowerbeds. Place a layer of newspaper, get it soaking wet and then cover with mulch and forget about weeds.

--To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant, but the squirrels won't go near it.

Freezer cooking day

A few days ago my mom and I got together to do some freezer meal cooking.

Lots of cheese, chicken and vegies!
We planned our menu, bought the ingrediants and had fun! Here's what it looked like:
we boiled chicken for stock and to shred and to cube.
25 lbs of hamburger..
First thing we did was start browning the hamburger and boiling chicken. When that was done we started with our first recipe:

SOUTH WEST CHICKEN/CROCKPOT
3 chicken breasts cubed
16 oz salsa
1 16 can of tomato sauce
1 pkg of taco seasoning mix
2 cans corn
1 can black beans
1 can kidney beans
1 8 oz bag of shredded cheese.
Mix all ingredients except cheese, place in large freezer bags, freeze. When ready to use, pull out of freezer night before, and dump alll ingredients in crockpot, except cheese. Stir cook on low for 6-8 hours- serve with cheese and tortilla chips. Serve in bowls w/ cheese and chips on the side.

Next we made:

SOUTH OF THE BORDER CHICKEN BAKE
2 can cr of mushroom soup
2 cans cr of chicken soup
3 ½ cups milk
4 cups cooked chicken – shredded
2 onions finely chopped
2 cups salsa
4 cups cheddar cheese- grated
24 corn tortillas each cut into 8 pieces
In large bowl, combine soups and milk, stir well. Add chicken, onion, salsa and 3 cups of grated cheese. Layer tortilla pieces first, top with chicken mixture into 3 lightly buttered 8x8 baking pans. Top with remaining cheese. Cover w/ foil and freeze.
To serve: thaw bake at 350 for 35-45 min or until bubbly.

COWBOY CASSOROLE
½ onion chopped
1.5 lbs gr beef
4 med potatoes/sliced
Garlic – to taste
1 can kidney beans
2 cans tomato soup
1 can corn
Mix everything except potatoes, place in freezer bag, and add potatoes when dumping into crockpot. Cover, cook on low 5-6 hours

Meaty Macoroni Bake
MEATY MACORONI BAKE
1.5 lbs hamburger
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 jar/can spaghetti sauce
1 cans mushrooms
12 oz macaroni (or other pasta)
1 cup sour cream
Shredded cheese
Cook hamburger till brown and crumbly. Drain, add onion and cook for 2 min. stir spaghetti sauce and mushrooms into skillet, simmer 5 min. cook pasta and drain. Layer the pasta, sauce, sour cream and cheese. Cover w/ foil. Bake for 25 min at 350. This can be made ahead of time, frozen and then thawed and baked for 35-40 min.'

The rest of our meals were:
BEEFY HASHBROWN BAKE
4 cups frozen has brown potatoes (thawed)
3 tbsp vegetable oil
Salt, garlic powder and pepper
1 pound hamburger
1 package brown gravy mix
1 cup water
1 pkg frozen veggies
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
In a shallow baking dish combined potatoes, oil and pepper, firmly press mixture across bottom and up sides of dish to form a shell. Bake, uncovered at 400 for about 15 min. meanwhile, brown beef, drain off fat. Stir in gray mix, water, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Add mixed vegetables, reduce heat to med and cook 5 min. stir in ½ cup cheese, and place in potato shell. *** at this point you can cover and freeze** (Thaw if frozen) bake uncovered at 350 for 15-20 min. sprinkle with remaining cheese and place in oven to let cheese melt.
SURPRISE CASSEROLE
½ cup macaroni
½ lb hamburger
3 tbsp onion, chopped
Salt/pepper to taste
1 can corn
1 can tomato soup
½ cup cheddar cheese grated
Cook macaroni, cook beef, and onions, salt and pepper. Arrange alternate layer of pasta, corn, and hamburger in a greased pan Pour soup over top, sprinkle with cheese and (freeze) Bake at 325 for 25 min or until heated through.

We also made a few pans of lasagne.
Our final tally was:
2 pans lasagne

A grand total of 31 meals and 4 cups of chicken broth. Took us 4 hours from start to finish. Not to shabby, and I got to spend time with my mom!

Honey Bunches of Oats review

As you all know I am a Purex Insider, and because of that I get the unique opportunity to review products for them.

This time they sent me a box of Honey Bunches of Oats-Honey Roasted now with More Granola Bunches!

I already like Honey Bunches of Oats, (HBO) so I was excited to get to have MORE BUNCHES! The cereal was yummy, and since it's something I don't buy often, my family was excited also. (The box was gone in 24 hours!)

I love that HBO has a whopping 10 grams of whole grain per serving and only 6 grams of sugar. When you are watching what you are feeding your family, it is nice to know that cold cereal can be good!

I will be having a giveaway starting tomorrow- Monday MAY 14! Prizes will be coupons for free HONEY BUNCHES OF OATS!

Post provided a free sample so I could review them. My opinions, as always, are my own!

Happy Mothers Day!!!

Hope you all have the best day ever.....

meal planning

For those of you who missed my talk last week at the Self Reliance Prepardness fair, here it is:

"It’s witching hour…You know, dinner hour. Kids whining, dog barking, hubby walks thru the door and asks.. What’s for dinner? Sound like your house?

Or
It’s dinner time. You look in the fridge and while it’s full of food, but you don’t know what to cook!
Does this sound familiar to you?
I can help… my little secret is MENU PLANNING.
Don’t know how or where to start with planning a menu? Let me help.

Here are some easy steps:
1) Write down every meal your family likes… mac & cheese, tacos, hot dogs, lasagna etc.
2) If you plan your meals with same ingredients you can save on time and shopping. IE lettce, cheese, tomatoes all good for tacos, hamburgers, salad night.
3) Make a calendar – 1 week/2 week whichever you want. ( I use 1 week- since I shop every week)
4) Plug in the meals into each day- take into account evening activities that your family may have. IE mutual, scouts, activity days, working late, date night etc.
5) You can do this for 1 week up to 4 weeks at a time. By making a menu, and writing your ingredients down, you can then plan shopping list.

When you make your shopping list, group all like ingredients together- i.e. dairy, produce, meat etc. Make sure you check your cupboards, pantry and freezer, frig when making list. You might find that extra can of tomato sauce you didn’t remember you had.. 1 less thing to buy.
I make a list and don’t stray from list. I do budget $10-15 per week is for “loss leaders. ” These are on sale items not on my list, but a real good buy to stock up on.
I also spend an hour or so on Sunday afternoon chopping veggies and making "snack bags" for lunches. This saves time and effort. Also, prevents me from buying that expensive lunch because I didn't have time to put one together in the morning.

Every little bit helps to save time, money and effort.. How do you menu plan?
